May 21st 2014, 6.30-8.30pm

Room G.17, University of East London
University Square Stratford, E15 1NF

On 3rd March 1943, 173 people, 62 of them children, died on the staircase of Bethnal Green tube station. They were victims of a crush that was to be the biggest civilian disaster of the Second World War. Join renowned social historian Juliet Gardiner, Sean Dettman, author of The Bethnal Green Tube Shelter Disaster of 1943: A Stairway to Heaven, Babs Clark, a survivor of the disaster, and Sandra Scotting from the Stairway to Heaven Memorial Trust for a discussion on the significance of the disaster in the history of East London, and to tackle the question of why this tragedy has been so overlooked in the history of the Home Front.

The discussion will be followed by a wine reception to which all are welcome.
