Home: new histories of living, 8-9 February 2018

The IHR’s 2018 Winter Conference, ‘Home: new histories of living’, brings together leading researchers to explore the history of domestic life. Plenary and panel sessions examine historical reconstructions of interiors, the history of individual rooms, gender and home, and visions of idealized life. Special attention will be given to new methods for researching histories of ‘Home’. The conference takes place over two days (8-9 February) and is separated into four interrelated themes:

  • Reconstructions: Imaging the domestic experience – convened by Catherine Richardson (Kent)
  • Rooms: Furnishing the idiosyncrasies of private life – convened by Sonia Solicari (Geffrye Museum)
  • Home-work: Re-framing gendered spaces – convened by Lynne Walker (IHR)
  • Dream Homes: Envisioning alternative futures – convened by Elizabeth Darling (Oxford Brookes)

Plenary lecturers include Owen Hatherley (architectural historian and journalist), Vanessa Harding (Birkbeck) and Jane Hamlett (Royal Holloway).
