History Workshop Journal (HWJ) and History Workshop Online (HWO) are seeking to appoint one Editorial Fellow in the academic year 2020-21.
This paid fellowship is intended to support early career scholars to develop their expertise in public, radical, and digital history and to gain valuable experience as working as part of an editorial board. Editorial fellows are expected to work collaboratively; use social media creatively; and commission, edit and publish engaging content. During the fellowship, they will also be supported to produce podcasts and to curate a series of articles on a subject of their own choosing.
In this round of fellowships, we are seeking to appoint a scholar with specialism in African, Asian, Pacific, Latin American, or Caribbean history.

History Workshop Online (HWO) is a digital magazine that seeks to continue the spirit of the History Workshop movement. We publish accessible and engaging articles for historians and the public and seek to deepen understandings of the past, reflect on issues in the present, and agitate for change in the future. Duties and responsibilities
Fellows are expected to contribute to the administration, curation, commissioning, editing, and promotion of HWO. They are given the freedom to commission (and write) their own posts within the mandate of the History Workshop, while being expected to work collaboratively with the wider HWO team. Fellows are responsible for commissioning and publishing a minimum of one article per month, sharing in administrative tasks, and assisting with production of the History Workshop Podcast. Fellows are expected to promote HWO and its content regularly on social media, and to use social media creatively to help generate conversation and new content for the site.
The fellowship is valued at £2,000 per annum and is taxable. While there are no set hours, it is envisaged that the fellow will devote about three hours per week to HWO duties. The duration of the fellowship will be one year in the first instance (October 2020 – October 2021), with a possibility of renewal for an additional year.
Editorial Fellows are nominated to a non-stipendiary Visiting Fellowship at Birkbeck, University of London, and have access to library and IT resources there.
Eligibility
This fellowship is intended for early career historians, in their final year of their PhD or beyond, who will not normally have a full-time, permanent academic post. To redress the underrepresentation of BAME scholars in history in the UK, we particularly encourage early career historians identifying as BAME to apply.
The successful applicant will have strong pre-existing social media experience and online literacy. They are expected to have a demonstrable commitment to public history, history from below, history and activism, and/or radical history. Fellows should also have excellent administrative and organisational skills. Experience using WordPress, Photoshop, or audio editing software would be an asset.
The appointed candidate will need to demonstrate that they have the right to work in the UK.

- a cover letter (no more than two pages), outlining the way that their work fits within the mandate of History Workshop, their previous relevant experience and online activities, and ideas about future directions for History Workshop Online.
