History Workshop Journal and History Workshop Online (HWO) are seeking to appoint one Editorial Fellow to assist in the running of the HWO website, social media channels and podcast. They will join a team of six HWO editors.
History Workshop Online (HWO) is a digital magazine that seeks to continue the spirit of the History Workshop movement. We publish accessible and engaging articles for historians and the public, that deepen understandings of the past, reflect upon present day issues, and agitate for change in the world we live in now. HWO is a politically pluralistic platform and publishes a wide spectrum of progressive radical opinion. You can find out more about HWO here.
In order to widen our coverage of historical topics, in this round of fellowships we have a strong preference for scholars working in a non-British area of history or in British world or imperial history. To widen our participation and redress the underrepresentation of BAME scholars in history in the UK, we particularly encourage those identifying as BAME to apply.
This fellowship, valued at 2000 pounds per annum, is intended to support the successful candidate(s) to develop their own careers online and to gain valuable experience working as part of a journal editorial board. Editorial Fellows are nominated to a non-stipendiary Visiting Fellowship at Birkbeck, University of London, and have access to library and IT resources there. Please note that the fellowship is taxable. The duration of the fellowship will be one year in the first instance, with a possibility of renewal for an additional year.
Duties and responsibilities
Fellows are expected to contribute to the management, curation, commissioning, editing, and promotion of HWO. They are given the freedom to commission (and write) their own posts within the mandate of the History Workshop, while being expected to work collaboratively with the wider HWO team. Fellows are responsible for commissioning and publishing a minimum of one article per month, sharing in administrative tasks, and assisting with the production of the History Workshop Podcast. Fellows are expected to promote HWO and its content regularly on social media, and to use social media creatively to help generate conversation and new content for the site.
While there are no set hours, it is envisaged that the fellow will devote about three hours per week to HWO duties.
Eligibility
The successful applicants will be early career historians, in their final year of their PhD or beyond, and will not normally have a full-time, permanent academic post. Fellows are expected to have strong pre-existing social media experience and online literacy and a demonstrable commitment to public history, history from below, history and activism, and/or radical history. Fellows should also have excellent administrative and organisational skills. Experience using WordPress, Photoshop, or audio editing software would be an asset. Fellows will normally be based in the UK.
Eligible applicants are asked to send one file containing (i) a one-page CV, highlighting previous relevant experience and the names of two references, along with (ii) a cover letter (no more than two pages), outlining the way their work fits within the mandate of History Workshop, their previous relevant experience and online activities, and ideas for directions they would like to take History Workshop Online.
Applications should be submitted by 5pm on Friday 30 August 2019 to hwoeditors@historyworkshop.org.uk.
Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed in late September.
